University & Personal

The University Hospital Basel and Bethesda Hospital have been working closely together in orthopaedics for several years. Plannable orthopaedic operations are carried out at Bethesda Hospital, while the USB concentrates on traumatology (accident surgery) as well as intensive care and emergency medicine. The close cooperation between the two hospitals improves the high quality, efficient and integrated orthopaedic and traumatological care in north-western Switzerland.

THE BEST INTERDISCIPLINARY TREATMENT

Because orthopaedic conditions can also be very complex, we work closely with the teams in related fields. Together, we work hard for you - so you are always in good hands with us and receive the treatment that is tailored to your condition. We work on an interdisciplinary basis in the following areas:

The Department of Anaesthesiology treats around 5000 patients a year before, during and after surgical procedures. We offer the entire spectrum of general and partial anaesthesia in modern anaesthesiology. Our service for patients is the result of a well-coordinated teamwork of doctors and nursing staff.

To the Clinic for Anaesthesiology

The Department of Neurology specialises in diseases of the peripheral nervous system, the spinal cord and the musculature as well as neurological diseases that manifest themselves through changes in mobility and/or movement sequences. It also specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of (head) pain disorders and seizure disorders (epilepsy).

As a professional partner, we provide our patients, healthy women and their families with the highest level of care and achieve excellent nursing and obstetric results.

To the nursing care

Physiotherapy is a central part of our focus area "musculoskeletal system" and is one of Bethesda Hospital's key qualifications. With a great deal of experience and empathy, our highly trained team will support you throughout the entire treatment process. We treat and advise you both as an outpatient and inpatient, for injuries, before and after operations and for musculoskeletal disorders.

To physiotherapy

We offer radiological diagnostics and minimally invasive treatments at the highest level. Our motivation is to offer modern medical equipment in a pleasant environment and friendly atmosphere. During your stay with us, you will be looked after by our team of registration secretaries, medical assistants and medical radiology specialists (MTRA), who will explain the examination procedures to you in detail.

More about radiology

Bethesda Hospital's expertise in the field of rehabilitation ties in with our focus on the musculoskeletal system and thus combines the multi-professional and interdisciplinary management of patient concerns "under one roof" in the sense of a holistic treatment pathway. Where necessary, therapy strategies, rehabilitative strategies and preventive strategies are assessed together with specialists from various medical and paramedical disciplines and reorganised if necessary. Highly developed technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging, bone densitometry and ultrasound are used to support this. We show empathy and stand for co-determination by working in partnership with the patient.

More about rehabilitation

Musculoskeletal complaints are very common, often extremely painful and associated with limitations. They can also have many different causes. Sometimes rheumatic complaints indicate a serious systemic illness. At Bethesda Hospital, you will find rheumatology and pain medicine combined in one clinic - so the various specialists can tailor treatment precisely to your needs.

To the rheumatology/pain medicine clinic

In co-operation with patients, relatives, doctors and nursing staff, the social service helps to find solutions for the forthcoming hospital discharge, aftercare or for problems in the social context. The social service provides assistance with professional or financial worries that may affect the recovery process.

Welt Down Syndrom Tag am 21. März – Vielfalt bereichert

Am 21. März ist Welt Down Syndrom Tag.

Positive mention of the orthopaedic clinic at Bethesda Hospital in Kassensturz

The orthopaedic clinic at Bethesda Hospital was positively highlighted in an article in the consumer magazine Kassensturz on 4 March 2025. The reason for this is the recording of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which measure the success of treatment from the patient's perspective.

The programme discussed the fact that although Switzerland has an expensive healthcare system, it does not always perform well when it comes to collecting quality data. PROMs are considered an important indicator as they directly reflect how patients are doing after treatment.

The Orthopaedics Clinic at Bethesda Hospital already actively uses these measurements, for example for shoulder operations. Patients regularly indicate how well they can use their shoulder again. This form of quality measurement offers a valuable addition to classic indicators such as complication or infection rates.
