Internal medicine - your contact for the entire organ system

Internal Medicine at Bethesda Hospital is responsible for patients who are suffering from multiple organ diseases and require comprehensive internal medicine, very often interdisciplinary and possibly also psychosomatic treatment and care. Good communication and cooperation with the general practitioners and attending physicians as well as specialists from other disciplines is an essential prerequisite for comprehensive clarification and treatment. Our experienced team is there for you and guarantees you the best treatment path for you.

The Clinic for Internal Medicine deals with a very wide range of different clinical pictures. These can affect the respiratory tract, the heart and circulation, the digestive organs, the kidneys and much more. But infectious diseases and the influence of nutrition on the body are also part of the broad field of internal medicine. The task of internists is to recognise these different diseases, treat them as best as possible and prevent them comprehensively. If necessary, patients with chronic illnesses are also treated by us over a longer period of time.

The internal medicine clinic offers diagnostics, counselling and treatment for the following internal diseases - always at eye level with you and with enough time for your concerns:

  • Heart, circulation and vascular system
  • Respiratory organs
  • Digestive organs
  • Kidneys and urinary tract
  • Metabolism and hormone balance
  • Infectious diseases (incl. HIV)
  • Blood and haematopoietic organs
  • Malignant neoplasms of solid tissue
  • Support and connective tissue

FAQs on internal medicine

Do you have any uncertainties or issues that concern you within our speciality?
We have compiled the most frequently asked questions about internal medicine, answered by our medical experts.

Do you have any other questions that are not answered here?
Please feel free to contact us - we will be happy to help.

The most common illnesses that our team clarifies and treats as inpatients are infections, cardiac insufficiency, unintentional weight loss, anaemia, venous thrombosis and derailed blood sugar (hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia). Acute myocardial infarction, acute stroke and acute confusion are not treated at Bethesda Hospital - there are specialised services for these cases at Basel University Hospital.

We will arrange a detailed initial appointment to take your medical history. If you have previously received medical treatment elsewhere, we will need the documents from the previous treatment centre. If you have chosen a special care model from your health insurance company, please clarify with your insurance company whether you can be treated by us.

Yes, most residents of the Gellerthof retirement centre receive internal medicine, general practitioner and home medical care from our internal medicine team. This is particularly the case if the previous family doctor is further away and does not make house calls on site. Our internists visit the retirement centre as required, but certainly every week, and visit the less mobile residents with health problems.

Of course - the internal medicine team regularly carries out infusion therapies in the practice, e.g. for iron deficiency or osteoporosis.

By prior arrangement, emergencies can be treated in the practice or in the emergency ward of Bethesda Hospital. As internal medicine is very broad and very complex, it is important that the patient themselves, a relative or the family doctor makes prior arrangements by telephone. We will then clarify whether we can treat you here or recommend treatment in the emergency ward of the University Hospital Basel (e.g. in the case of an acute heart attack).
