Psychedelic-assisted therapy in palliative care at Bethesda Hospital

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is a therapy for patients with a (potentially) life-threatening illness, depression and/or anxiety, when other therapies do not help.

New scientific findings indicate that psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT) with MDMA and psilocybin ('mushrooms') can help people with life-threatening illnesses through crises and in coping with their illness. However, PAT can currently only be carried out with special authorisation from the Federal Office of Public Health if other established therapies have not worked and is not reimbursed by health insurance companies.

On the basis of the legal foundations available in Switzerland, we would like to make this therapy available to patients with anxiety, depression and other existential suffering. The therapy comprises several therapy sessions (including preparation and integration), usually over a period of several months. The therapy is supervised by experts with appropriate training.

  • Group and individual therapy
  • Substance-supported therapy days with preparation and integration sessions
  • at the Palliative Care Centre at Bethesda Hospital, Basel
  • hybrid (on site in Basel and online)
  • Total duration: over a period of months

The costs of PAT are currently not fully covered by health insurance companies. Therefore, only patients who are able to cover the costs that are not covered by their insurance can currently be treated.
