Bethesda Hospital is the first clinic in the Basel region to offer state-of-the-art, certified pre-eclampsia screening. Pre-eclampsia is also commonly known as pregnancy poisoning and is one of the most common causes of death among pregnant women in Western countries. If the disease remains untreated, it can lead to life-threatening seizures (so-called eclampsia) and even coma. This course of the disease is life-threatening for both the pregnant woman and the child.
Early detection is therefore crucial. Special blood and ultrasound tests can be used to recognise 80-90% of pregnancies in which pre-eclampsia develops before the 34th week of pregnancy. If the examination reveals an increased risk of pre-eclampsia occurring, early prophylaxis with low-dose aspirin can reduce the rate of pregnant women who actually develop early onset pre-eclampsia by more than half.
This means that for the first time we not only have the chance to recognise risks, but also to prevent the disease from occurring - an important difference to the established screening for Down's syndrome in the unborn child, for example.
