Bethesda & USB - The best of two houses

Bethesda Hospital and the University Hospital Basel (USB) are strengthening their collaboration. This solution offers significant advantages for patients and parents-to-be, as well as for the health region of Northwestern Switzerland.

Bethesda Hospital and the University Hospital Basel (USB) have been working together successfully for several years in orthopaedics and other specialist areas. Now those responsible have decided that the USB will take over 60% of the shares in the private hospital in the Gellert quarter, while the Bethesda Diaconate Foundation will continue to hold a 40% stake in the hospital. The innovative step of the merger was a logical consequence for both hospitals.

By working together, Bethesda Hospital complements its tried-and-tested family and personal culture with cutting-edge university medicine if required and requested by patients. This combination is unique in the region and offers patients and expectant parents even more flexibility and security of care without having to forego the comfort of a private hospital. The free choice of doctor and hospital remains a matter of course.

«Our many years of collaboration have shown that the strengths of our two companies complement each other perfectly.»

Thomas Rudin, CEO Bethesda Spital AG

The Bethesda culture lives on

Central to the project is that the proven and popular culture of Bethesda Hospital is retained: patients of Bethesda Hospital can continue to rely on the familiar and popular care in "their" hospital. The two hospitals have promised each other to combine the best of their two hospitals - the result should continue to be familiar and personalised treatment with access to university medicine.

We accompany your birth comprehensively and individually in line with our philosophy.

Interview with Dr David Hänggi, Medical Director of Bethesda Hospital

Dr Hänggi, what will happen in the area of pregnancy and childbirth at Bethesda Hospital, for example?
Dr David Hänggi, MBA HSG and Medical Director (CMO) of Bethesda Hospital: Nothing will change for pregnant women who wish to give birth at Bethesda Hospital: they will still be free to choose whether they want to have their baby at the USB, at Bethesda Hospital or at Bethesda House of Birth. And it will stay that way.

Bethesda has its own popular philosophy in obstetrics - will you remain true to this?
Absolutely. We will continue to support pregnant women in our usual way right from the start: Personal, familiar and at eye level. We will also continue to follow our principle of carrying out births naturally wherever possible, i.e. without a caesarean section - the same applies to our approach to bonding, in which we are pioneers.

What will change in general for patients at Bethesda Hospital?
In any case, nothing to the detriment of patients - quite the opposite: Bethesda Hospital will remain a hospital for chief physicians and attending physicians. And the Bethesda culture will continue as before. Our aim is to pool our expertise in our focus areas, develop them further for the benefit of our patients and further improve the already high quality. But never at the expense of our typical and popular family atmosphere. In this way, we combine the strengths of both hospitals for the benefit of our patients.
