ISO-certified AEMP: How Bethesda Hospital prevents infections

Bethesda Hospital has one of the lowest infection rates* in Switzerland. The ultra-modern and ISO-certified reprocessing unit for medical devices (AEMP) makes a very important contribution to this.

Depending on the operation, surgeons need up to 650 instruments. All the necessary scissors, forceps, forceps, clamps, other surgical instruments and reusable medical devices are reprocessed in Bethesda Hospital's own central reprocessing unit for medical devices (AEMP). To keep distances as short as possible, the AEMP is located right next to the operating theatres.
"Naturally, we work to the highest quality and hygiene standards. There are no compromises in the AEMP," explains Reza Rezai, expert in the reprocessing of medical devices and head of the AEMP/CSSD department. The 10 AEMP employees ensure seamless monitoring of the individual process stages and smooth commissioning and delivery of the operating theatre and departmental instruments.

«In our AEMP, we combine precision and responsibility - every single one of the 650 instruments undergoes a seamless quality process that protects lives.»

After the operation, the instruments are taken directly to the AEMP, where they are cleaned, disinfected, sterilised and prepared for the next operation in a process lasting three to four hours. Stubbornly soiled parts are pre-cleaned. All instruments are then placed in washer-disinfectors (a kind of large dishwasher), where they are cleaned and disinfected for around 70 minutes at 90 degrees with hot water and chemicals, explains Reza Rezai.

Highest quality standards

Each instrument is then checked by hand in the packing area. This takes place in a clean room and under the highest hygiene standards. If an instrument is slightly damaged, rusty or has any other damage, it is rejected. the barcode is used to digitally record every step for each instrument. The instruments are then placed in the steriliser (a type of oven), where they are sterilised at 134 degrees for 18 minutes. "We can trace the entire life cycle of every single instrument 100 per cent - from procurement to every application to disposal," says Reza Rezai.
Thanks to the modern technical equipment and the high level of expertise of the qualified employees, the AEMP is one of the most modern operations. "It has never happened that an operation could not take place because an instrument was missing. And of course we are proud to have one of the lowest infection rates in Switzerland," explains Reza Rezai.

The reprocessing unit for medical devices (AEMP) in figures:

  • 30,000 instruments in circulation
  • 865,000 instruments are reprocessed per year
  • Life cycle of each instrument can be fully traced
  • ISO-certified
  • One of the lowest infection rates in Switzerland
