World Breastfeeding Week from 16 - 22 September 2024

Kleines Baby wird von Mutter fürsorglich gestillt

Breast milk is the optimal nutrition for infants. Breastfeeding promotes the health of mother and child in both the short and long term. Breastfed children are less likely to suffer from diarrhoea, respiratory diseases and middle ear infections in the first year of life. In the long term, breastfed babies are also less likely to be overweight in later childhood and adulthood and less likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to non-breastfed children. They also have fewer allergies. For the mother, the risk of breast cancer is reduced.

Protecting breastfeeding: a responsibility of society

Breastfeeding Promotion Switzerland is an independent, national competence centre for all professional groups and organisations working in the field of pregnancy, birth and infants, as well as an information platform for parents. It is committed to optimising the legal and social framework conditions for breastfeeding.

She writes: "In Switzerland, many mothers want to breastfeed their child. Unfortunately, for organisational reasons, they often stop earlier than recommended by experts. With World Breastfeeding Week from 18 to 25 September 2021, the participating organisations in Switzerland are reminding us of the shared responsibility for breastfeeding-friendly framework conditions in all areas of society.

«Every woman who wants to breastfeed must be allowed to breastfeed: anywhere and at any time.»

Parents' personal decisions about their child's diet are respected. Every family should be supported according to their individual needs. Good framework conditions are essential for breastfeeding mothers: Society has an interest in ensuring that as many children as possible are breastfed for the recommended duration.
