Music therapy in palliative care: sounds of comfort and harmony
Music has the power to touch people deeply in difficult phases of life and to give them comfort. At Bethesda Hospital's Palliative Care Centre, music therapy is used specifically to support patients and their relatives.
Music therapy goes beyond a purely supportive measure. It helps to awaken emotions, make it easier to let go and create a connection between people. As music works on a level that goes beyond words, it enables access to feelings that are otherwise difficult to express. Each therapy is customised to the needs of the patient in order to achieve the greatest possible effect.
The instruments of music therapy
Various instruments are used in the therapy. The body tambura, a stringed instrument with a resonating body, produces calming vibrations and promotes deep relaxation. The kantele, another stringed instrument, supports the musical accompaniment and enables intense emotional expression. Those who want to actively participate can create their own sounds with the sansula, a thumb piano. In addition to other instruments such as the guitar or the RAV Moon, a kind of miniature handpan, the voice also plays an important role. Singing creates an atmosphere of closeness and security, often supported by singing together with relatives.
The effect on patients and relatives
The positive effect of music therapy is not only felt by the patients themselves. Relatives also often feel relief when they observe how their loved ones find peace and relaxation through the sounds. Music creates a space for feelings and enables a more conscious farewell process. Care staff also benefit from the calming atmosphere created by the targeted use of music.
Part of a holistic concept and interdisciplinary cooperation
At the Bethesda Hospital Palliative Care Centre, music therapy is firmly integrated into the interdisciplinary care concept. A regular exchange between the various specialist areas ensures that patients receive holistic and individually tailored support. The combination of different disciplines creates harmony and promotes the well-being of all involved.
Comfort and hope through music
Music therapy offers a way of providing comfort, hope and sensitive support during the last stage of life. It is assumed that music not only creates a connection to oneself, but also to other people. This makes music at the Bethesda Hospital Palliative Care Centre a valuable component of support during difficult times.
