State-of-the-art surgical techniques in gynaecology

Das Aufklärungsgespräch ist wichtig, um alle Unklarheiten zu beseitigen.

Thanks to the keyhole technique and state-of-the-art surgical technology, gynaecological procedures at Bethesda Hospital can be carried out gently and efficiently so that patients can return home quickly.

Anyone who has ever had abdominal surgery knows how long recovery can take. This is why modern surgery today favours minimally invasive surgical methods wherever possible, which are much gentler on the body. These include laparoscopy, for example, in which the doctor can examine and operate inside the abdominal cavity using a narrow, tubular instrument.

«Gynaecologists were the pioneers of so-called keyhole surgery. The first procedures were of a diagnostic nature, later operations on the fallopian tubes or ovaries were performed using this technique and nowadays almost anything is possible.»

Dr Hansjörg Huemer, Head of Gynaecology, Bethesda Hospital

There are several options for minimally invasive surgery in gynaecology. "In addition to laparoscopy, the vaginal surgical technique is also considered minimally invasive and leaves no visible scars. This means that we have two very gentle approaches available to us in gynaecology. Whenever possible, vaginal surgery should be used for a hysterectomy because the results are equally good, the operation takes the same amount of time and this option is cheaper and gentler," says Huemer. The skin incisions during laparoscopy are usually small and are generally sutured with a stitch that dissolves itself.

High-tech in the operating theatre
The gynaecologists at Bethesda Hospital are leaders in the field of minimally invasive surgery and operate almost exclusively using these gentle methods. The instruments have developed considerably in recent years.

«Bethesda Hospital has once again invested in the latest operating theatre technology, which enables us to work even more gently and at the same time with ever more precise image and operating quality»

Even the smallest changes can be seen in this way. The advantages are obvious. Patients are back on their feet more quickly, serious complications are rarer and there are fewer adhesions in the abdominal cavity.
The minimally invasive techniques have significantly reduced the length of hospitalisation. Patients can usually return home the next day or two after the operation.
