We provide competent and empathetic support for cancer patients

In gynaecological oncology at Bethesda Hospital, we deal with the treatment and therapy of malignant tumours that occur specifically in women. In addition to breast cancer, these include endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer and cancer of the external genital area (vulvar cancer). As the leading hospital in the field of gynaecology in north-western Switzerland, we benefit from our many years of experience in gynaecology.

Rapid diagnosis and targeted treatment are very important in the case of gynaecological cancers. Our highly specialised team of in-house and affiliated doctors will be at your side from the very beginning and will accompany you respectfully, empathetically and with excellent specialist knowledge in line with the latest research. We perform surgical procedures gently and minimally invasively and are also there for you at all times during aftercare.

If a tumour is suspected in the gynaecological area or in the breast, we offer you special consultations on this topic. We will inform you in detail about possible therapies and the best option for you.

The consultation can take place either with our attending physicians or with a member of our medical clinic team.

We are here for you.

At Bethesda Hospital, our gynaecological oncology department offers both screening examinations and consultations on the next steps. We will clarify exactly whether and how far your disease has progressed and what further treatment steps are possible for you.

In cooperation with our interdisciplinary Breast Centre, the Pelvic Floor Centre and the Dysplasia Centre, we can offer you a cross-departmental service that covers all gynaecological cancers and makes you feel well looked after.

We are here for you.

Our surgical services include all outpatient and inpatient conservative and surgical treatment options, rounded off by highly specialised oncological procedures. In close cooperation with our colleagues from the interdisciplinary breast centre, the pelvic floor centre and the dysplasia centre at Bethesda, we provide you with holistic and interdisciplinary care.

We are here for you.

«We attach great importance to professional medical, nursing and therapeutic support. However, human warmth and empathy are just as important to us.»

Gynaecological diseases

Our gynaecologists have compiled a list of the most common diseases that we treat at our clinic. Find out about symptoms, frequency and treatment options here. We are happy to take time for you - the disease database is in no way intended to replace a personal consultation.

What sets our gynaecological oncology department apart

You are in good hands with us: At Bethesda Hospital, we have been specialising in women's medicine for many years - this is one of our core areas of expertise and we offer you the best treatment in Basel and north-western Switzerland. With us you will find top-class medicine combined with the personal atmosphere that is typical of us.

Are you about to have an operation with us? We are committed to ensuring that your operation is as safe and gentle as possible. Our inpatient specialists mainly operate using buttonhole surgery (laparoscopy). This involves the use of a narrow instrument for which a tiny incision is sufficient. This means that the operation is less painful for you, you recover more quickly and can go home sooner. In addition, this gentle procedure causes less blood loss and the scar after the operation is significantly smaller than after a traditional procedure.

Do you have any questions about this minimally invasive surgical procedure? Your gynaecologist will be happy to explain the individual steps to you in detail.

In the sentinel technique, a radioactively labelled substance is injected around the lump before the actual breast operation. This substance accumulates in the same lymph node into which the tumour will first spread if individual cells have already entered the lymphatic system. With the help of a probe that can measure even very low levels of radioactive radiation, this so-called sentinel lymph node can then be identified during the operation and selectively removed. The remaining lymph nodes are initially left in place.

The removed lymph node is analysed for fine tissue. If no tumour metastases are found in the lymph node, it can now be assumed that all other lymph nodes remaining in the armpit are also tumour-free. It is therefore not necessary to remove the remaining lymph nodes. If tumour metastases are found in the sentinel lymph node, the remaining lymph nodes are removed from the armpit as part of another operation. With sentinel lymphadenectomy, we therefore perform a procedure that can spare many women the removal of the axillary lymph nodes.

This also gives us a good feeling: Bethesda Hospital performs excellently in a comparison of infection rates among Swiss hospitals. Thanks to the highest quality standards, we even have one of the lowest infection rates in Switzerland for operations to remove the uterus.
