Bethesda Hospital recognised the importance of health-oriented training 26 years ago and was therefore the first hospital in north-west Switzerland to open a medical training therapy (MTT) centre. The concept is based entirely on the motto: "Prevention is better than cure" - accordingly, the current 900 subscribers are coached dynamically exclusively by highly qualified and specialised trainers and therapists.
Medical training therapy is not only available to former patients, but to all health-conscious people who want to do something good for their body with strength and endurance training, or who want to maintain their mobility for as long as possible. "The idea of medical training therapy was developed in the 1960s by the Swede Rolf Gustavson. He brought together modern physiotherapy methods and findings from sports science with the aim of maintaining or restoring performance," explains Claudia Picenoni, Head of Medical Training Therapy.
Training as individual as your fingerprint
The respective goals of those training are very different: one subscriber wants to run the Basel City Marathon and is looking for optimal training methods, another wants to cure his knee problems so that he can ski again, the next is doing physiotherapy to return to work as soon as possible after an operation.
That's why the focus when a new member joins is on a detailed interview and filling out the health questionnaire to clarify their state of health. "Once the physical performance in the areas of strength, flexibility, balance and endurance has been determined, a training and fitness programme tailored to the customer's needs is developed and careful training on the correct use of the equipment is provided," explains Claudia Picenoni, emphasising: "Especially after injuries to the musculoskeletal system, such as ligament, muscle and joint injuries, it is important to continue maintaining muscle training after therapy has been completed. This prevents new injuries, overloading and further damage!"
