Im Alter treten Degenerationskrankheiten auf, die das Leben erschweren können. Die Spinalkanalstenose beispielsweise ist eines der häufigsten Krankheitsbilder. Charakteristisch für die Krankheit ist, dass die Betroffenen nur noch kurze Strecken im Gehen bewältigen können, Fahrradfahren beispielsweise
jedoch kein Problem darstellt. Diese Symptome gehören zur Abklärung in erfahrene medizinische Hände.
Wenn ein Wirbel beispielsweise aufgrund von Osteoporose bricht, treten plötzlich starke Schmerzen im Rücken auf. Auslöser können harmlose Stürze oder schon leichtes Heben sein, teilweise treten die Brüche auch spontan auf. Später kann ein Wirbelbruch zu erheblichen Formveränderungen der Wirbelsäule führen und die Betroffenen dauerhaft invalidisieren. Daher ist eine frühzeitige Erkennung und Behandlung wichtig.
Die Aufgabe des Chirurgen ist es nicht nur zu operieren, sondern auch zu beurteilen, wo es nötig oder sinnvoll ist und wo keine Operation nötig ist. Deshalb ist es von Vorteil, wenn wir den Verlauf frühzeitig begleiten und beobachten können. In vielen Fällen reicht eine konservative Behandlung.
